The present state of Minnesota carries a complicated and layered history through the thousands of years the several native peoples who have been in relationship and kinship with the land here and in the several hundred years since European settlers colonized this region. The United States’ land seizures denied the Dakota and Anishinaabe free and unhindered access to the land that fundamentally shapes their identity and spirituality. We reflect on this past, acknowledging that the land on which we live is a confluence of legacies. Knowing this past leads us to take action that will redress wrongs and build mutually constructive opportunities.
